These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are a legal agreement between you and Auteur(“we,” “us,” “our”) covering your use of the Auteur mobile application and related services (the “Service”). By downloading, creating an account, or using Auteur, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service. Questions: hello@auteurxyz.com.
The Service
Auteur is a cultural-learning companion for iOS. You choose a domain — art, music, wine, film, literature, and more — state a goal, and receive AI-generated reading threads (“Issues”) with spaced-repetition review. The Service is provided for personal, non-commercial use.
Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use Auteur. The Service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly allow them to create accounts. By using the Service you confirm you meet this requirement and can form a binding contract.
Your account
You create an account by signing in with Apple or Google. You are responsible for activity under your account and for keeping access to your sign-in provider secure. You may delete your account at any time — in-app via Profile → Delete account, or by emailing hello@auteurxyz.com — which permanently deletes your data as described in our Privacy Policy.
Subscriptions and billing
Some features require a paid subscription, sold as an auto-renewable in-app purchase processed by Apple through your Apple ID.
- Price and term. The price, billing period, and any free trial or introductory offer are shown on the purchase screen at the time you subscribe.
- Free trial / introductory offer. If your subscription begins with a free trial or discounted introductory period, it converts automatically to the standard recurring price at the end of that period unless you cancel beforehand. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited if you purchase a subscription during the trial.
- Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the then-current price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID is charged at confirmation of purchase and at each renewal.
- Managing and cancelling. Manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID settings (Settings → your name → Subscriptions). Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Refunds.All purchases are processed by Apple and are subject to Apple’s refund policies; we do not directly process payments or issue refunds. To the extent permitted by law, payments are non-refundable except where required by applicable law.
- Price changes. We may change subscription pricing for future billing periods; Apple will notify you and, where required, seek your consent before a renewal at the new price.
AI-generated content — important
Auteur’s learning content is generated by artificial intelligence (Anthropic’s Claude). It is produced automatically and may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies. It is provided for general educational and cultural enrichment only and is not professional, financial, medical, legal, or other expert advice. Do not rely on it as a sole source of fact — verify anything important against authoritative sources. You use AI-generated content at your own discretion and risk.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of these Terms;
- attempt to probe, scan, reverse-engineer, decompile, or disrupt the Service, its servers, or its security;
- use automated means to access the Service, scrape content, or generate content at a scale or in a manner that abuses the AI generation features;
- resell, redistribute, or commercially exploit AI-generated content or any part of the Service without our written permission;
- submit content that is unlawful, infringing, or that you do not have the right to submit.
We may suspend or terminate access that we reasonably believe violates these Terms.
Intellectual property
The Auteur app, its design, software, editorial materials, and the curated flagship content are owned by Auteur and protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for your own learning.
Your own inputs — your goals, journal captures, and notes — remain yours. You grant us a limited license to store and process them solely to operate the Service for you. AI-generated Issues created for your account are licensed to you for personal, non-commercial use.
Third-party services
The Service relies on third parties, each governed by its own terms: Apple (distribution, payments), Supabase (hosting, authentication, database), Anthropic (AI generation), and RevenueCat (subscription entitlement state). We are not responsible for the acts or omissions of these providers. Image content is fetched at runtime from Wikipedia/Wikimedia, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Open Access API, and Unsplash, subject to their respective terms.
Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that AI-generated content will be accurate or reliable.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Auteur will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service. To the extent liability cannot be excluded, our total aggregate liability is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) HKD 500.
Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold Auteur harmless from claims, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your misuse of the Service or your breach of these Terms.
Termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate the Service, or your access to it, for any reason permitted by law, including a breach of these Terms. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination (intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, governing law) survive.
Apple-required terms
These Terms are between you and Auteur only, not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no warranty obligation with respect to the app, and any claims relating to the app are our responsibility, not Apple’s. Apple is not a party to these Terms, but is a third-party beneficiaryand may enforce them against you. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as “terrorist-supporting,” and are not on any U.S. Government prohibited-parties list.
Changes to these Terms
If we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Hong Kong for the resolution of any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service.
